Effects of Norepinephrine, Epinephrine and, Serotonin on the Phagocytic Function of the Reticulo-endothelial System in the Normal and Splenectomized Rats

Abstract
To investigate the role of spleen in the mechanism of the norepinephrine, epinephrine and serotonin on the reticuloendothelial function, the phagocytic activity was assessed by means of carbon clearance method after these amines were injected into the normal and splenectomized rats.
The results were as follows;
1 . In the normal and splenectomized rat administered with physiologic saline, there was no significant change in the phagocytic activity in comparison with that of the normal rats.
2 . In the normal rats injected with norepinephrine, epinephrine and serotonin, phagocytic activity was increased significantly as compared with that of the normal rats.
3. Compared with phagocytic activity of the normal rats, in the splenectomized rats injected wit:h norepinephrine, epinephrine and serotonin, phagocytic activity was increased significantly. In the norepinephrine treated group, phagocytic activity shows more marked increase than other groups.
This result suggests that the action of norepinephrine, epinephrine, and serotonin which increa¡©sed reticuloendothelial function was not due to secondary effect of the endocrine or splenic control, but due to direct action of these amines on the reticuloendothelial cells.
